AI that can look at the human body and return accurate, actionable understanding is one of the fastest expansions anywhere in technology — and the smartphone scan is already how hundreds of millions of people first ask a machine about their health. Skin is where that future is arriving first: the body’s most visible organ, the world’s second most-searched health topic, and the specialty where image-based AI has progressed furthest.
02 — The frontier
AI is becoming the first reader of human skin.
Today it reads only a fraction of humanity fluently.
In a 2025 study of 324 biopsy-confirmed lesions, a frontier AI model detected melanoma with 100% sensitivity on the lightest skin types — and as little as 29% on the skin most of the world lives in. That is not one model’s flaw; it is the field’s data inheritance. Until 2022, no publicly available dataset contained a single biopsy-proven malignancy on skin of color.
The models that read every tone accurately will define the standard of care. They do not yet exist. Building them is the largest unclaimed opportunity in health AI.
